Mechanics
Mechanics of Steel Ocean are more or less a replication of ideas present in its main competitor – World of Warships (and other games from Wargaming.net). During the gameplay, the players take over chosen ships and take part in naval battles for up to 32 players, in few different gameplay modes. The battles take place on almost 30 maps, modeled after different battle theatres from WWII era. The gameplay takes place in real time, and the players are rewarded for participating in battles with virtual currency that can be spent on new ships and upgrading those already owned.
In the basic version of Steel Ocean, players are left with over 150 warships from five countries (USA, Japan, Germany, France, and China), separated into six basic classes, such as destroyers, light and heavy cruisers, dreadnoughts, aircraft carriers, and submarines. All vessels have been realistically recreated based on their real counterparts, both in terms of appearance, as well as technical parameters. Each of them can be led by one of the hundreds of real commanders from WWII era, based on historical data. Additionally, the developers recreated hundreds of original tactics used by these vessels depending on maps, environment, weather conditions, etc.
Game modes
Steel Ocean for PC offers the ability to play in a few different gameplay modes, from typical simulation variants up to more arcade ones, in the vein of classic MOBA games. Thanks to such solution, each player can find a gameplay mode suited to his own preferences. When it comes to PvP battles, teams up to 16 players on each side may compete. The ability to create and join legions (type of guilds) is also here. Similarly to the aforementioned World of Warships, the key to success is the ability to cooperate as a team and the use of specific abilities of the individual classes of ships, in which the built-in voice chat helps immensely.
Technical aspects
When it comes to visuals, Steel Ocean for PC has certain shortcomings in relation to its competitor from Wargaming.net. Nevertheless, the game has some highlights in form of large amount of content available from the beginning, dynamic weather and day-and-night cycle, or the preserved flavor of naval battles.
